Robin Thicke’s smash hit song “Blurred Lines” has become the fastest selling single in the digital age, selling more than 5 million copies in just a 22-week period. Its risqué video has garnered more than 140 million views on YouTube. Even Miley Cyrus’s eyebrow-raising version of the song at the MTV Video Music Awards has only served to extend the popular life of “Blurred Lines,” just when many other hit songs would be winding down in popularity. While Thicke is certainly appreciative of the success, his recent lawsuit for declaratory relief of non-infringement of the copyrights to songs by Marvin Gaye and Funkadelic points up the more seedy side of the music business. HRFM Attorney Andrew K. Gonsalves discusses the lawsuit and its back story in his IP Frontiers article entitled “Clearing Up Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines,” The Daily Record, October 18, 2013.
